One of the two ancient elven city-states remaining, Wainryn
has accepted outside influence far more readily than their trade partner at the
opposing end of the river that links them. Serving as one of the major trading
ports of the Green Coast, Wainryn sees goods and wealth from all over the known
world and beyond.
Rising Tensions
Until recently, elves were the only ones allowed to be any
profession except for merchant or servant. When King Andullyn took the throne sixty
years ago, the restrictions for humans were removed, as well as changing his title
from Gonrenin to King. His hopes were that such changes would settle the
growing unrest within the city’s large number of humans.
For the most
part, the measures worked. The humans within the city were quick to take
advantage of the new opportunities, as well as appreciating the symbolic
gesture of the king’s title. Though many of the nobles grumbled, few felt
strongly enough about humans to really do anything.
However, the
measures only improved the lives of humans. For the city’s growing population
of half-elves, finding work was as hard as ever. Most of the elves in the city
see half-elves as criminals, thieves, and thugs. With those in charge of the
major businesses unwilling to hire half-elves, most have little choice but to
turn to crime.
This has resulted
in more than a dozen predominantly half-elf criminal organizations. The largest
of which is called Cyllynwch, an Elven word that roughly translates to “knife
in the dark”. A power vacuum has arisen in the Merchant’s District with the
death of the leader of the largest gang in the district: the Brotherhood of the
Severed Ear. High ranking members of the Brotherhood have been fighting to take
the place of their fallen leader, and various gangs from other districts have used
the power vacuum to try and establish a foothold.
A City of Trade
Second only to Argoport, Wainryn is one of the largest
trading ports in the Green Coast. Goods from all over can be found here, be it
Whaleden scrimshaw to books from Drynaryn. Unlike Argoport however, certain
goods are only allowed in certain districts. The higher quality alcoholic
beverages are permitted in the Longleaf District, home to the nobility, while
everywhere else is stuck with cheap ale. Literature from anywhere besides
Drynaryn is banned outside of the Docks District, Merchant’s District, and
Cobbler’s Way.
Of course, just
because something is banned, doesn’t mean it is not available. A rich black
market exists selling and smuggling goods to various places within the city
that they are not permitted.
Recently on the
streets, a new drug has arisen with unusual side effects. Called Death’s Blood,
this nearly black red substance grants the one that imbibes it a temporary
boost in strength, agility, and toughness. However, the longer that one uses
it, the stronger the side effects become: an unquenchable thirst, a chill that
no fire will drive away, and sensitivity to sunlight. From the few samples that
the city’s mages and alchemists have been able to obtain, they have determined
that it is the blood of some kind of undead. A few suggest neavir, but more
potent and powerful.
Adventure Hooks
The city guard
have placed a bounty on anyone bearing the mark of one of the city’s gangs.
However, they probably won’t work too hard that a random marked half-elf is
brought in.
While visiting
the city, a half-elven man offers you a hefty price to smuggle some goods to a
nobleman. Provided you do not look in the case.
